SEXUAL SINS
Immorality (porneia- Any form of
illegitimate sexual behavior-Eph. 5:3; Gal. 5:19) Do you understand the
rightful place of sexual relations within a marriage? Are you guilty of
abusing your God-given sexual desires in the form of fornication, adultery,
homosexuality, etc.? Do you realize that this sin is always mentioned
first in the biblical "sin lists" and is emphatically forbidden by God?
Impurity (akatharsis- More general
than immorality to also include the thoughts and intentions of the mind-1
Thes. 4:7; Eph. 4:19) Are you still controlled by your pre-conversion
sins of lust? Is there a sexual uncleanness in your imagination or speech?
Do you fantasize lustfully after anyone other than your spouse?
Passion (pathos- Sexual passion
set loose in pursuit of sexual excess-Mat. 5:28; 1 Thes. 4:5) Are your
thoughts dominated by a desire for unrighteous sexual fulfillment? Are
those desires greater than your quest for godliness and purity? Are you
dangerously only one or two steps away from acting on your sexual passions?
Evil desire (epithumia- This sin
precedes lust because illicit sexual conduct is ultimately an evil desire
against God's holy law- Rom. 1:18-24; Jas. 1:15) Do you realize the root
of sexual impurity and its offense to a holy God? Do you see the selfishness
in sexual desire in viewing others as objects and the hurt committed against
your spouse? Do you associate ungodly sexual desires with evil desires?
Greed (pleonexia- Unchecked hunger
for sexual pleasure, a never satisfied desire to have more- Jas. 4:2-3;
Lk. 12:15) Do you realize that sexual thoughts are ultimately a dissatisfaction
with the spouse God has provided? Are you coveting another's spouse? Are
you content with God or are you pursuing the god of self in wanting more?
Idolatry (eidololatria- Placement
of sexual desire over desire for God- Num. 25:1-3; Mat. 6:24) Do you realize
that a quest for sexual sin with an unrepentant heart amounts to idolatry
because it places your greed over the pursuit of God? Do sexual thoughts
outweigh godly thoughts on the throne of your heart? Does "fleshly entertainment"
outweigh time in the Word and prayer?
SOCIAL SINS
Anger (orge- Deep settled feelings
of hatred in a continuing state- Gal. 5:20; Jas. 1:19-20) Do you struggle
with an ongoing feeling of hostility in your heart? Do vent or internalize
anger or is anger handled appropriately? Do you blame your anger on others
or take full responsibility?
Wrath (thumos- Sudden outbursts
of anger- Eph. 4:31; Gal. 5:20) Are you known to "fly off the handle?"
Do you realize that your rage only reveals the anger in your heart? Are
you patient with others or quick to explode?
Malice (kakia- Vicious nature bent
on doing harm to others- 1 Pet. 2:1; Tit. 3:3) Do you plan evil for another
and/or rejoice to see them fail? Is your desire to see others succeed,
even at your expense? Do you have a deliberate intention to harm others
through your thoughts, word or actions?
Slander (blasphemia- Speech which
reviles another human being- Mk. 7:21-22; Prov. 10:18) Do you speak evil/hurtful
comments of another either to their face or behind their back? Do you
excuse slander in the form of a "prayer request?" Do you realize that
blasphemy against man is blasphemy against God (Jas. 3:9)?
Abusive speech (aischrologia- Exhaustive
category of improper use of the tongue- Eph. 5:4; Mat. 12:34-36) Are you
in control of your tongue? Are you guilty of obscene, foul or dirty language?
Do your words edify or tear others down?
Lying (pseudomai- Deliberate attempt
to circumvent the truth- Eph. 4:25; Rev. 14:5) Do you understand the fruit
that deceit brings to your reputation and relationship with God and people?
Are you guilty of "white lies" and exaggeration, bending and stretching
the truth? Do you realize that lying characterizes Satan (Jn. 8:44) and
not God (Tit. 1:2)?
